The Opt Outside initiative encourages people to avoid the holiday hustle and bustle by spending the day outside. This year, the park will offer guided programming throughout the day on Nov. 29, and each activity will be free to participants.
As an added incentive, those who participate in a ranger-led program will receive a pass to one of the park’s Christmas lighting events, which will take place every Saturday and Sunday from Nov. 29 to Dec. 21.
Park-goers are also invited to enter Virginia State Park’s photo contest, which will run from Nov. 28 to Dec 1. For contest details, visit http://vasp.fun/2019optoutside.
How to Opt Outside
Park guests will have the choice to Opt Outside on Nov. 29 with the following guided and self-guided programs:
11 a.m. — Hike with a Ranger: Join a ranger on a guided hike on their favorite trail. View unique natural and historic areas normally not seen while milling along the parks trails. Meet at the Visitor Center. (Free)
2 p.m. — A Gawk in the Woods: Join a ranger on a scavenger hunt to find all of the colors, shapes and sizes that are found in nature. How many will you find? This is a great program for children and families. Meet at the Visitor Center. (Free)
Self-guided activities: Stop by the Visitor Center and pick up a copy of the Natural Tunnel Scavenger Hunt or self-guided tree hike.
