Spano boosts Greeneville past D-B in Tribe Classic

KINGSPORT — Braden Spano was too much for the Dobyns-Bennett baseball team to handle Friday in the annual Tribe Classic.

Spano, batting out of the No. 3 spot for Greeneville, went 3-for-4, including a home run and a double, drove in two runs and scored twice in the Greene Devils’ 8-3 win over the host Indians.

Jacques Gillespie-Taylor also played a key role for Greeneville by driving in three runs. He was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Chase Collins yielded three runs on seven hits, striking out seven and walking one in picking up the win.

The Tribe lost despite outhitting the Greene Devils 8-6, and all but two of D-B’s hits were doubles. Noah Hale, Jaden Alderson, Grayson England, Dakota Harkleroad and Jackson McDavid each recorded a two-bagger.

Hale was the lone D-B player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3.

Knox Catholic 7, Science Hill 1

JOHNSON CITY — Nic Harpst pitched a complete game, allowing one run on four hits, in the Irish’s Tribe Classic win at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

The Hilltoppers got their run on a Cade McCoy groundout in the fifth. Jackson Hill worked four innings and took the loss.

Union 11, Sullivan North 10

BIG STONE GAP — Landry Baker was 2-for-2 with an RBI and run scored, Nate Bailey drove in three runs and the Bears outslugged the Golden Raiders in an interstate matchup.

Casey Hartsell was 4-for-5 and scored three times for Sullivan North.

Tennessee High 11, University High 3

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Vikings generated a dozen hits in Tribe Classic action at Thomas Stadium.

Henry Borthwick went 2-for-3 and Essau Byrd was 1-for-1 with a double, an RBI and three walks for University High.


Dobyns-Bennett 13, Sullivan Central 4

KINGSPORT — Morgan Riffle spearheaded the Lady Indians’ 14-hit onslaught by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Riffle counted two doubles and three runs scored at the plate and nine-strikeouts and a complete game from the circle.

Makaila Collier totaled four RBIs, a double and a pair of runs during her 3-for-5 performance. Peyton Domby banged out a pair of doubles, Kassidy Miller coupled two hits with two RBIs and Kierstan Judd drove home two runs.

Evee Babbisto also contributed four runs and a pair of walks to D-B’s cause.

Alexa Chandler was 2-for-3 and Courtney Willis had two RBIs for the Lady Cougars, who were victimized for seven unearned runs.

David Crockett 13, Beloit Memorial 0

David Crockett 7, Beaver 6

ORLANDO, Fla. — Mackenzie Baldwin homered twice and knocked in seven runs in the Lady Pioneers’ six-inning rout of Beloit Memorial in the Disney tournament.

Baldwin also doubled in a 4-for-4, three-run performance. Kara Weems pitched a three-hitter and went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scores.

Riley Hope, who homered, doubled and scored twice, and Ashlyn Dulaney added two hits apiece.

Against Beaver, Hope unloaded a grand slam and totaled five RBIs. Her round-tripper came in a five-run third inning for Crockett that erased a 3-0 deficit, and she broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth with an RBI single.

Unicoi County 12, Sullivan South 5

ERWIN — Chloe Powers, Halie Hawkins, Carly Kinsler, Ashtan Vance and Bella Bogart had two hits apiece in the Lady Blue Devils’ NFS tournament win over the Lady Rebels.

Powers supplied the biggest blow, a grand slam in a seven-run Unicoi County second inning.

Vance, Hawkins and Kinsler also homered. Vance and Kinsler both contributed a double, and Vance had two RBIs.

Allee Griffith picked up the win, yielding three earned runs in five innings of work. She struck out four and walked none.

Daniel Boone 11, East Carter, Ky. 4

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Lady Trailblazers capped their week at the Ripken Experience by beating defending Kentucky state champion East Carter.

Camryn Sarvis’ solo home run in the first inning sent Daniel Boone on its way. Nickolette Ferguson pitched the win, surrendering four runs on one hit and striking out 10 over six innings. Megan Ackerman earned the save.

Dannah Persinger smacked a three-run homer for Boone, which totaled eight hits. Jaycie Jenkins (triple, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Ackerman (2 RBIs) and Brylee Mesusan had two apiece.


Gate City 1, John Battle 0

BRISTOL, Va. — Ethan Shipley scored three minutes in for the Mountain District match’s only goal, and Luke Reed made three saves to secure the Blue Devils’ win.

In the girls’ game, Gate City and Battle played to a scoreless tie thanks to an incredible 18 saves by Brooklyn Smith.
