Lady Blue Devils blow past Generals in district opener

GATE CITY — An 11-run explosion in the bottom of the third inning propelled Gate City’s softball team to a quick victory in its Mountain 7 District opener, a 15-0 win over Lee on Tuesday.

The Lady Blue Devils (3-0, 1-0) pounded out 15 hits in the five-inning game. Sarah Thompson went 3-for-4 — all doubles — and drove in five runs to set the offensive pace. Kiersten Quillen was 3-for-4 and Avery Johnson went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

Kate Pendleton (3-0) pitched four innings for the win. She limited the Lady Generals to three hits and struck out five before giving way to Abby Davidson, who didn’t give up a hit.

Abingdon 8, Sullivan East 4

BLUFF CITY — Kylee Wolfe and Jillian Shackelford tallied three hits apiece, but the Lady Patriots fell in the interstate matchup

Wolfe had a double and scored a pair of runs. Emily Perry was 2-for-4 for East, which fell behind 8-0 in the third.

Sullivan Central 8, Johnson County 5

BLOUNTVILLE — The Lady Cougars rallied from a 5-3 deficit to beat the Lady Longhorns.

Katie Horne went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Madison Flannagan was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Sydney Snapp, who also drove in a run, pitched five innings and yielded five runs — just one earned — while striking out five. Jasmine Sheffield tossed two scoreless frames in relief.

David Crockett 3, Tennessee High 0

JONESBOROUGH — Kara Weems two-hit the Lady Vikings, striking out 11 in the Big 7 Conference win.

The Lady Pioneers pulled out the win despite managing only five hits off Bailey Lamb and committing five errors in the field.

Mackenzie Baldwin, Weems and Alyssa Suits drove in a run apiece. Leadoff batter Suits went 2-for-3.

Daniel Boone 11, Greeneville 1

GRAY — Megan Ackerman starred at the plate and on the mound in the Lady Trailblazers’ nonconference win.

Ackerman homered among her four hits, driving in five runs, and recorded seven strikeouts in pitching the win.

Jaycee Jenkins coupled three hits with three RBIs for Daniel Boone.



Gate City 12, Lee 0, 5 innings

BEN HUR — The Blue Devils pushed across five runs in both the third and fourth innings of their shortened Mountain 7 win over the Generals.

Tyler Hamm had three hits for Gate City, Carson Jenkins drove in three runs and Drew Meyers gave up three hits and struck out five for the win.

Lee’s Canaan Phillips took the loss.

Union 18, Ridgeview 2, 5 innings

BIG STONE GAP — After falling behind 1-0, the Bears unleashed an 11-run second inning and a six-run third in the Mountain 7 thumping.

Austin Gibson had two of Union’s 15 hits and recorded three RBIs, as did winning pitcher Mason Caldwell.

Gabe Counts had two of Ridgeview’s three hits.

Sullivan North 10, Unaka 0

KINGSPORT — Braydon Wilhoit pitched a one-hit shutout, Tyler Depriest rapped out two hits and the Golden Raiders added a second straight win over the Rangers to their résumé.

On Monday, Sullivan North edged Unaka 8-5 in eight innings behind Casey Hartsell’s home run and double. Wilhoit and Chandler Raleigh also had two hits each, and Hunter Dingus registered the win in relief of Cole Bear.

Sullivan South 16, Happy Valley 0

MILLIGAN COLLEGE — Drew Creech hurled a five-inning one-hitter for the Rebels, who had also one-hit the Warriors on Monday. Creech yielded only a fifth-inning single to Drew Turner and struck out seven.

South got three hits and three RBIs from both James Seto and Chase Bowery. Bowery doubled twice and accounted for four runs, and Jeffrey Leonard totaled four RBIs.

Creech, Leonard, Austin Monds and Cole Layne produced two hits apiece.

Johnson County 10, Sullivan Central 0

BLOUNTVILLE — Jayden Joiner pitched a three-hit, five-inning shutout, accounted for two of the Longhorns’ 14 hits, scored twice and bagged three of the visiting team’s 15 stolen bases.

Trey Sells, Kaden Grayer and Preston Staubus each went 1-for-2 for the Cougars.

Daniel Boone 14, Volunteer 4

GRAY — Cade Elliott fanned a dozen plus recorded three hits and three RBIs in the Trailblazers’ Big 7 win.

Hunter Adams had three hits, Ben Allen added two and Logan Rivers finished with two RBIs for Daniel Boone.

Aaron Wills drove in three of Volunteer’s four runs.

Tennessee High 25, David Crockett 5

JONESBOROUGH — The Vikings got a helping hand from 12 Pioneers errors.

Tennessee High’s Gavin Cross tallied three RBIs and scored four times and Peyton Fox also had three RBIs. and winning pitcher Davis Hall helped his cause with two RBIs and five runs scored.

Cody Wheeley and Nolan Miller each had two RBIs for David Crockett.

University High 17, Hampton 5

HAMPTON — Zach Rice, Brant Hare and Carter Pollock combined for 11 RBIs and the Bucs drew 14 walks from Watauga Valley Conference foe Hampton.

Rice went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, adding three runs and a pair of walks. Hare, who scored two runs and walked twice, hit an inside-the-park grand slam in the seventh inning. Pollock drove in three runs.

Weston Street went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Bulldogs

Late Game

Sullivan East 12, Unicoi County 3

ERWIN — Brantley Ellis racked up nine strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings and went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs for the Patriots.

Dylan White, Dylan Bartley and Hunter Mullins each had two hits, and White, Bartley and Eli Milhorn recorded two RBIs apiece for East.


Girls Soccer

Gate City 2, Lee 1

BEN HUR — Jamie Watts scored a pair of second-half goals, getting assists from Amanda Vermillion and Abby Williams, to boost the Lady Blue Devils to the Mountain 7 District win.

Katelyn Parton came up with nine saves in goal.

Wise Central 4, Lebanon 0

LEBANON — Taylor Gentry notched a brace and Mary Stuedemann and Amalia Nylen recorded a goal and assist apiece for the Lady Warriors.

Lauren Webb assisted on the other goals.


Boys Soccer

Gate City 4, Lee 0

BEN HUR — Matt Johnson scored all four goals — two on either side of the half — against the host Generals.

Noah Jones and Andrew Pendleton each had an assist and Luke Reed recorded five saves.

Lebanon 2, Wise Central 1

LEBANON — Patrick Cantrell scored off an assist from Ashar Khan in the nondistrict road loss.
