Prep roundup: D-B, Wise Central pick up volleyball wins; Volunteer nips Cherokee in soccer

JONESBOROUGH — Zoie Larkins had 22 assists, and Dobyns-Bennett defeated David Crockett in a Big 7 Conference battle, 25-23, 25-12, 25-19.

Carly Shell had nine digs and five assists.

Emma Gouge had eight kills and 11 digs, Maddie Pleasant had 19 digs and Jessican Foister had 19 assists and eight digs for David Crocket in the loss.

Science Hill 3
Tennessee High 1

JOHNSON CITY — Science Hill failed to get a sweep against Tennessee High on Thursday night, but came up with a late rally in a dramatic fourth set to brush away the Lady Vikings in Big Six volleyball action.

The Lady ’Toppers took a 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24) win at the new Science Hill Gymnasium. Ella Gay led the way with 14 kills, including clinching shots in the first and final games. She also had four blocks.

Sara Whynot had 13 kills, eight digs and three aces. Three players had double-doubles. Layton finished with10 kills and 14 digs, while Jesse Franks had 31 assists, 13 digs and four kills. Alyssa Neal added 23 assists, 10 digs and three kills for Science Hill.

Kloey Tester paced the Lady Vikings with 13 kills, followed by Kenzie Nickels with 10 kills and six blocks. Jamayia Honaker had 10 kills, Macy Hurley served four aces and Riley McCracken had 13 assists.

Abingdon 3, Union 1

BIG STONE GAP — Emme Thompson had 31 assists, 12 digs, eight kills and five aces, and Katie Harless had 20 kills and 13 digs as Abingdon defeated Union on the road in a Mountain 7 District clash, 25-16, 25-10, 16-25, 25-14.

Morgan Blevins had 16 digs and nine kills, and Lacie Bertke and Abby Boyd combined for 35 digs for Abingdon.

Emili Brooks had 20 kills and seven digs for the Lady Bears.

Wise Central 3, Lee High 0

BEN HUR — Charlee Long and Olivia Sanders each had 10 kills, and Wise Central went on the road and took down Lee High in a Mountain 7 District clash, 25-20, 25-21, 25-14.

Hannah McAmis had 15 digs, and Caitlin Glover and Living Elkins combined for 26 assists for Wise Central.

Holston 3, Twin Springs 0

NICKELSVILLE — Abbey Conde had 10 points and 19 assists as Holston went on the road and grabbed a win over Twin Springs in a non-district contest, 25-20, 25-23, 25-14.

Madeline Statzer and Jordan Lowe combined for 15 assists.

Alyssa McCracken had 23 digs, Chloe Gilmer had 23 assists and Chloe Lane had 15 digs for Twin Springs.


Volunteer 1, Cherokee 0

CHURCH HILL — Hawkins County schools met Thursday night in Church Hill, where Volunteer nabbed its second 1-0 victory over Cherokee this season.

Just as she did in the teams’ first meeting, Emma Lukens accounted for the only goal.

Erin Smallwood minded her net for the shutout, and Megan Christian dominated the back line. In addition, Christian drove the length of the field and almost scored from her defensive position on two occasions.

Makenzey Smith proved outstanding at the right defensive mid-position for the Lady Falcons, who won their third consecutive match — all in shutout fashion.
