ROGERSVILLE — The public is invited to attend Hawkins County's annual Legislative Breakfast on Feb. 8 to hear a report on pending state and federal legislation from Congressman Phil Roe, State Sen. Frank Nicely and State Rep. Gary Hicks.

Tickets are still available for the breakfast which begins at 9 a.m. at the Charles Fuller Hawkins County Education Training Center (a/k/a Bus Shop), 1722 E. Main Street, Rogersville. The breakfast is hosted by the Rogersville Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber director Nancy Barker told the Times News on Wednesday that with major state and federal offices up for election this year, a healthy contingent of candidates and/or their proxies are expected to be on hand as well to meet the public.

But, the main purpose of the Legislative Breakfast is to give the local community an opportunity to meet their current state and federal representatives, and hear their position on legislation that will be considered this year.

“They give a legislative update on pending legislation, anything that is going to affect Hawkins County, anything that they're going to support, and to get feedback from the public on legislation that they're supporting,” Barker said. “Most of the bills have been filed, or they know what's being filed. If there's something that you want supported, this is a good opportunity to talk to them before or after they speak. We do a little question and answer at the end, but it's basically a legislative update.”

Roe represents the First Congressional District of Tennessee which includes Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, Washington, Jefferson and Sevier counties. Congressman Roe is Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and he serves on the House Education and Workforce Committee.

“Congressman Roe is retiring from Congress this year, and this will be the last opportunity to hear him speak at our event,” Barker said. “He has been a wonderful Congressman for the First Congressional District of Tennessee and especially Hawkins County. He has a true servant heart and will be greatly missed.”

Sen. Frank Nicely (R-Strawberry Plains) represents the Eighth District, which includes Claiborne, Grainger, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, and Union Counties.

Nicely is 1st Vice-Chairman of the Senate Energy, Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee; 2nd Vice-Chairmain of the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee; and a member of the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee.

Rep. Gary Hicks (R-Rogersville) represents Ninth District, which includes Hancock and Hawkins counties.

Hicks is Chairman of the House Finance, Ways, & Means Subcommittee; and a member of the Finance, Ways and Means Committee; Finance, Ways and Means Appropriations Subcommittee, State Committee, Public Service and Employees Subcommittee and Joint Pensions and Insurance Committee.
