Graham two-way star Allen doubles up on POY honors

Graham senior Cam Allen was Mr. Everything this season when it came to G-Men football. He proved that again Tuesday with the release of the VHSL Class 2 all-state football team.

Allen was not only a topnotch quarterback but also one of the best defensive backs in the state, and he was named both the Class 2 offensive and defensive player of the year.

Graham coach Tony Palmer, who led the G-Men to the state championship, was named as the coach of the year.

First-team Class 2 all-state picks included Ridgeview running back Trenton Adkins — one of only two sophomores on the first team — along with Union offensive lineman Brandon Bunch, Graham wide receiver Devin Lester, Richlands kicker Levi Forrest — also the first-team punter — and three G-Men defensive players: linebacker Nick Kastners, Allen at defensive back and Lester at defensive back.

Among the players from Southwest Virginia making the second team were Lebanon running back Seth Stanley, Richlands wide receiver Horn Taylor and Marion tight end Chance Langston on offense and Marion defensive lineman Will Moss and Graham defensive back Chris Shinault on defense.

The Eastside and Wise Central boys along with the girls from Eastside, Wise Central and Twin Springs will be competing in the Smoky Mountain Classic tournament at Gatlinburg-Pittman.

All five of the teams are playing in different brackets in the 72-team tournament, which runs Thursday through Sunday and includes schools from throughout the Southeast. The boys’ tournament features five brackets and the girls’ event features four.

The undefeated Ridgeview girls will also be in the Smokies this week to compete in a tournament in Pigeon Forge. The Wolfpack will take on Morristown East on Thursday in the opening round, and tournament games also are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
