Seniors to don pads once more on high school gridiron

Several seniors from Southwest Virginia football teams will have one more shot at putting on the pads and playing competitively on the high school level this weekend.

The Virginia High School Coaches Association will host seniors from across the commonwealth in the organization’s annual All-Star Game. The contest will be played Saturday at Virginia-Wise’s Smith Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

Players from all over Virginia will participate in the event, among them quarterback Jabari Blake of VHSL Class 3 champion Heritage of Lynchburg.

The 79 players will be divided into Team Red and Team Blue.

Southwest Virginia players on Team Blue are punter Drew Vermillion of Gate City; quarterback Jordan Rasnick of Eastside; quarterback Bailey Turner, offensive lineman Brandon Bunch and kicker Justin Falin of Union; wide receiver Matthew Sexton and linebacker McKenzie Sproles of Ridgeview; defensive lineman Dylan Adkins and quarterback Race Moir of Richlands; and running back Greg Sanchez and linebacker Logan Branson of Chilhowie.

Graham offensive lineman Gabe Sesco and Virginia High linebacker Aaron Rose are playing for the Red Team.


Emory & Henry College will be the site of Saturday’s annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-Star Game that will feature football players from Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.

The West squad, which is being coached by Elizabethton’s Shawn Witten, includes Gate City offensive lineman Isaac Stapleton; Union running back Avery Jenkins; Rye Cove linebacker Matt Gibson; Twin Springs fullback Cole Burke; Lee High’s Dwayne Garrett and Ethan Wynn; Wise Central’s McKinley Dale; Thomas Walker’s Chase Fulton and Peyton Redinger; Dobyns-Bennett’s Lendon Redwine and Nic Bristol; Sullivan South’s Aaron Watterson; and Sullivan North’s Zach Scott and Kyle Fields.

Virginia High’s Michael Crist is coaching the East squad, which features Mason Hall, Justin McCoy and Jessie McCoy of Eastside; Tyler Thayer, Gabe Boothe, Jake Crosswhite and Sean Canada of Abingdon; Nathan Tiller, Judd Shaffer and Turner Lyon of John Battle; and Calleb Meade and Brue Mullins of Castlewood.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
