GATE CITY — The naming of a new Gate City football coach remained incomplete late Tuesday.

The Scott County School Board met Tuesday and planned to name an individual to replace Chris Akers as the head of the Blue Devil football program.

By late Tuesday night, the school board had not made their decision.

The school board and other school system employees interviewed three finalists for the position last week.

Two of the candidates are within the Scott County school system, while the other candidate was from a neighboring school system.

Akers’ teams finished a combined 7-24 in his three years at the helm.

This season, Gate City finished 1-9 for the second year in a row.

Gate City’s only win in 2018 was a 23-20 victory over Lee High on Oct. 12.

Gate City defeated Wise Central 14-12 in the final game of the 2017 regular season to avoid going winless.

In 2016, his first season coaching the Blue Devils, Akers led them to their only playoff appearance in the past four seasons. Gate City lost its first five games that year but closed the regular season by winning its last five.

The Blue Devils fell to Glenvar 34-27 in the first round.
