Wines leaves the high school after serving six years as principal. He joined the Hawkins County school system in 1990 and previously served as principal at Mount Carmel Elementary and Surgoinsville Middle; assistant principal at VHS and Church Hill Middle; and science teacher and coach at Church Hill Middle and Volunteer.
Director of Schools Matt Hixson told the Times News Thursday that after the first semester last year, CVES Principal Stephanie Mann expressed a desire to return to a more direct student service setting.
She filled a vacant English Language Development position within the district, and retired CHMS Principal William Christian stepped in to finish the school year as principal at CVES.
“As he transitions to CVES, I look forward to seeing what Mr. Wines can do in continuing the growth and success Mrs. Mann and Mr. Christian have facilitated with the staff,” Hixson said. “While the staff at VHS will miss Mr. Wines, CVES staff will gain a seasoned leader with elementary experience. Thanks to Mr. Christian as he filled in this spring and successfully navigated the second semester with the CVES teachers and staff. We all wish him well as he now can return to retirement once again.”
Wines has a B.S. in general science and an M.Ed. in educational leadership and policy analysis from East Tennessee State University.
“First of all, I hate the COVID situation for the seniors,” Wines said. “I’ve watched the majority of those students grow up through the years and have been the principal for some of them for nine of their 13 school years. I like change. Six years at VHS is the second-longest tenure I’ve had at any one particular position. It is time for a new chapter and I’m excited about it.”
Wines added, “The staff at VHS is incredible, so the new principal will be walking into a great situation from a faculty standpoint. I look forward to attending VHS events as merely a spectator.”
Earlier this year, longtime VHS athletic director Jim Whalen stepped down and will be teaching this year at Volunteer.
Hixson said Volunteer’s principal and athletic director vacancies have been posted.
“Once we have a qualified field of candidates screened, we will start interviewing principal candidates and then proceed with the AD position,” Hixson said.
