BLOUNTVILLE — Rabies vaccination clinics will be held throughout Sullivan County on Thursday, May 2, at 6 p.m.

County residents can get their pets vaccinated for $10.

“Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal that occurs in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Domestic animals account for less than 10 percent of the reported cases with cats, cattle and dogs most often reported rabid.”

“In 2018 Tennessee reported 30 animals positive for rabies. Of those 30 animals, there were two raccoons, one dog, six bats, and 21 skunks. Sullivan County reported one skunk for 2018. Johnson County reported one raccoon and Greene County reported three skunks.” said Jerry Taylor, environmental health specialist with the Tennessee Department of Health.

Since the beginning of this year there have been six positive cases of rabies statewide, Taylor said, including one skunk in nearby Greene County. The other five cases were reported in Hamblen, Hamilton, Rutherford, Williamson and Davidson counties, Taylor said, and included four skunks and one raccoon.

Taylor also said it is essential to have all pets, outdoor and indoor, vaccinated against rabies.

Tennessee law requires all dogs and cats 3 months of age and older to receive and maintain rabies vaccinations.
