Gilliam Insurance Advisor: Helping people navigate Medicare, life insurance questions

Sunday Stories • May 23, 2020 at 9:00 AM

Just over a decade ago, Brenda Gilliam lost her mother. Her mother’s death was unexpected, and the impact on Brenda and her family was devastating.

In addition to the painful loss of a loved one, Brenda and her family quickly realized her mother had not received the health care she needed and had no savings and no life insurance.

“We had to sell our personal belonging, and take money from savings just to give her the most affordable burial possible, and by the most affordable, I mean not the ideal funeral we wanted to give her,” Brenda explains, adding that because of the cost, they couldn’t even afford to place the headstone at her grave at that time.

“It was this personal experience that led to me deciding to try and prevent others from facing a similar situation,” Brenda said. “I realized this was an issue for many families, so I started helping individuals on Medicare get the most out of their healthcare; improving their lives and health. I also educate and assist families and individuals with life insurance options to protect their families.”

What Brenda’s family learned the hard way is finding — and navigating — insurance on your own can leave people very vulnerable. So, armed with a bachelor’s degree in medical science and early experience as a public educator, Brenda turned her attention to educating Medicare beneficiaries and clients from all walks of life about how to get the most out of their health care and better protect their families and assets for future circumstances. That passion for helping others led to the creation of her business, Gilliam Insurance Advisor.

Through Gilliam Insurance Advisor, Brenda offers educational sessions and presentations at various locations in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, as well as one-on-one consultations via telephone, email, video conferencing, and in-person meetings at convenient locations or in the home. The consultation is free — with extra measures in place to provide a safe and secure experience.

“I have adjusted to having one-on-one meetings via Zoom and GoToMeeting to allow for the face-to-face experience from your smart phone or computer. I have acquired the ability to get you into a plan using electronic signatures via email. So, you never need to leave your home for the consult,” Brenda explained. “While not ideal given our current circumstances, I’m also available for in-person meetings subject to location and the practicing of social distancing guidelines, which include the use of masks and a distance of six feet apart.”

Brenda does not work for the insurance companies; she works for her clients. She contracts with multiple carriers and has the freedom to compare plans which enables her to help find the best Medicare plan and life insurance for each person’s needs and budget.

“I dedicated my time to knowing all things Medicare and options available to Medicare beneficiaries; the best health care possible and at the most affordable price,” Brenda said. “I am who you want in your corner when it comes to helping you choose the right Medicare plan that covers your needs and budget.”

“While I provide my services to a variety of clients, from business owners to lawyers, my heart and passion is for low-income individuals who need all the help they can get,” Brenda stressed, “and I make sure to provide all the extra help available to them.”

Preventing other families from going through what her family went through is more than a job for Brenda; it’s her passion.
