GATE CITY — Zac Ervin picked Elon.

The Gate City basketball star and one of the highest recruited high school stars in the region announced late Monday on social media that he has decided to continue his collegiate career at Elon.

“Excited to announce that I am committed to Elon,” Ervin posted on Twitter just before 10 p.m.

The 6-foot-5 shooting guard committed to Wofford in August but decommitted earlier this month after coach Mike Young left the Terriers to take the coaching position at Virginia Tech. Ervin subsequently received offers from 25 to 30 schools.

“This time around it was a really hard decision to make,” Ervin said Monday. “There were just a lot of really good schools and programs that I was blessed to choose from.”

After narrowing his top five choices to Wofford, Appalachian State, Furman, East Tennessee State and Elon, Ervin said he didn’t really make up his mind until this past weekend.

“Really, Elon was not the school I was considering really hard until I made my visit on Saturday,” he said. “This is one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make in my life. But after visiting Saturday, I just fell in love with it. It’s a great place and the coaches were great and the team was great. It’s just really a great school and it has great facilities.”

Elon is a private liberal arts university in Elon, North Carolina. The Phoenix compete in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Ervin led Gate City to the Region 2D championship this past season and was named the VHSCA Class 2 all-state player of the year after finishing his career with 2,351 points.
