ELIZABETHTON — The Elizabethton Twins stole a game from the Kingsport Mets with a walkoff two-run single in the bottom of ninth by Ricky de la Torre to score Colton Burns and Trevor Casanova and claim a 4-3 victory Wednesday.

Kingsport seemed to have control of the game with five consecutive scoreless innings after the third.

Mets starter Willy Taveras pitched eight strong innings, but Brian Metoyer walked the bases loaded in the ninth and gave the Twins the opportunity for the win.

Johan Quezada ended up with the win, pitching 2 1/3 innings and striking out three.

The Twins stretched the lead in the Appy League West to 2½ games. This was the last game in the season series.

After the game, there was a brief altercation as the two teams headed to the locker rooms, but no punches seemed to be thrown.

Taveras went eight strong innings and only threw 81 pitches through seven innings. He allowed two runs on six hits with no walks.

Guillermo Granadillo continued his outstanding series with a leadoff single to start the game for the Mets. After Granadillo stole second, Twins starting pitcher Tyler Palm threw back-to-back wild pitches and Granadillo scored.

In the third, the Mets hit back-to-back two-out triples by Jarred Kelenic and Shervyen Newton, who scored on a Luis Santana single for a 3-0 lead.

The Twins got something going in the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles by de la Torre and Yeltsin Encarnacion.

Lean Marrero doubled to the gap in left field and de la Torre scored to cut the Kingsport lead to 3-1.

Jean Carlos Arias drove in Encarnacion to make it 3-2. That’s how it stayed until the ninth.

The Twins will host the Bluefield Blue Jays for a weekend series with first pitch at Joe O’Brien Field slated for 7 p.m.

The Mets will be on the road once again for a weekend series at Danville. First pitch at Dan Daniel Memorial Park is set for 7 p.m.
