Brooks topples school kills record in Union's win

BIG STONE GAP — Emili Brooks killed a school record for the Union volleyball team on Tuesday night.

The senior totaled 12 kills to eclipse the school record in that category, and the Lady Bears rolled to a 25-9, 25-10, 25-9 victory over visiting Ridgeview in a Mountain 7 District matchup.

In addition to surpassing 1,500 kills, Brooks finished with seven digs to reach 1,000 for her high school career.

Brook Bailey contributed heavily in the victory with 27 assists and four kills, Isabella Blagg totaled 14 digs and Jada Smith had a team-high 13 kills for Union.

Kassidy Rasnick tallied eight digs and five assists for the Lady Wolfpack.

ABINGDON 3, JOHN BATTLE 2

BRISTOL, Va. — Emme Thompson had a whopping 49 assists and 14 digs and Morgan Blevins slammed a school-record 26 kills in the Lady Falcons’ 25-13, 25-17, 28-30, 23-25, 15-9 win over the Lady Trojans.

Blevins also had 20 digs, Katie Harless totaled 17 kills and 18 digs and Lacie Bertle had 25 digs for Abingdon.

Bethany Smith had 33 digs and Keelie Pippin 22 assists for Battle.

TWIN SPRINGS 3, J.I. BURTON 0

NORTON — Chloe Gilmer had 14 kills and 21 assists to power the Lady Titans to a Cumberland District sweep of the Lady Raiders.

Ryleigh Gillenwater had 25 kills, Emma Dingus had 15 assists and Alyssa McCracken had 18 digs in Twin Springs’ 25-14, 25-17, 25-14 win.

RYE COVE 3, THOMAS WALKER 1

EWING — Eva Roach posted a double-double of 24 assists and 12 digs in the Lady Eagles’ 28-26, 18-25, 27-25, 25-19 Cumberland victory.

Emily Bishop had 15 service points and 24 digs and Kaleigh Sloan had 29 digs and nine kills for Rye Cove.

PATRICK HENRY 3, RURAL RETREAT 0

RURAL RETREAT — Abigail Belcher had 10 kills and eight blocks and the Lady Rebels earned the nondistrict road sweep, 25-19, 25-15, 25-10.

Logan Newberry tallied five aces and 10 assists, Ella Maiden had 10 kills and Hannah Holmes had nine digs for Patrick Henry.

HONAKER 3, HURLEY 0

HONAKER — Abigail Lester smacked 16 kills to lead Honaker to the easy 25-3, 25-8, 25-8 win.

Autumn Miller had 15 service points and 13 assists and Emma Barton had 10 digs for the home team.

VOLUNTEER 3, DAVID CROCKETT 0

JONESBOROUGH — Josie Stapleton had 16 digs and Jersey Wines added 15 in the Lady Falcons’ 25-13, 25-13, 25-16 road victory.

Jersey Wines knocked down 11 kills and Rylee Wines came through with 11 assists for Volunteer.

VOLUNTEER 3, SULLIVAN SOUTH 0

CHURCH HILL — Taylor Castle and the Lady Falcons secured a home match for the first round of the postseason with the shutout win over the Lady Rebels.

Castle recorded a hat trick and goalkeeper Erin Smallwood kept a clean sheet for Volunteer. Seniors Riley Dobbs, Megan Christian and Riley Trent dominated the back lines in the win.

ELIZABETHTON 2, DOBYNS-BENNETT 0

KINGSPORT — The Lady Cyclones built a two-goal lead in the first half and held off the Lady Indians for the nondistrict win at Indian Highland Park.

Emilee Lane stole the ball and scored in the 75th minute, but D-B was unable to find the equalizer.

 

SCIENCE HILL 5, TENNESSEE HIGH 0

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Four players scored goals for the Lady Hilltoppers, who finished unbeaten in District 1-AAA play and have the top seed for the upcoming tournament.

Freshman Megan Burleson netted a pair of goals, and Paige Carlsen, Sophia Youngman and Savannah Fields scored the others. Keeper Miaka Miller recorded the shutout.

The Lady Vikings have the No. 2 seed.
