Prep roundup: Cloudland shuts out North

KINGSPORT — Kaylen Fields recorded four RBIs, Kenzie Birchfield crafted a shutout from the pitching circle and the Lady Highlanders breezed to a 9-0 Watauga Valley Conference win.

Fields batted 2 for 2 with a double and a sacrifice fly. Also for Cloudland, it was Heaven Caraway going 1 for 3 with a double, a sacrifice fly and an RBI, and Jasmine Birchfield collecting a double and two RBIs in four at-bats.

Kenzie Birchfield yielded six hits, didn’t walk a batter and had two strikeouts.

The Lady Raiders got a 2 for 3 day from Elaina Gilliam. Gracie Monk, Kaitlyn Lemmons, Brooklyn Robinson and Alexis Lipoma each went 1 for 3, with Monk’s hit going for a double.

David Crockett 6, Volunteer 3

CHURCH HILL — Home runs from Alyssa Suits, Maddie Roy and Mackenzie Baldwin staked the Lady Pioneers to a 6-0 lead over the first 2 1/2 innings.

Suits went deep to lead off the game, Roy launched a three-run shot in the second and Baldwin homered in the third. Matty McKee turned in a 3-for-4 effort while Suits, who also doubled, and Jenna Davis each supplied a pair of hits.

Striking out seven batters over the first four innings, Kara Weems and Davis combined on a three-hitter.

The Lady Falcons’ Alli Chandler ripped a two-run, fifth-inning homer. Jersey Wines doubled in two at-bats.

Unicoi County 21, Sullivan Central 3

BLOUNTVILLE — Caroline Podvin went 3 for 3 with a double and two runs for the Lady Blue Devils, who plated 11 first-inning runs and banged out 15 hits in a three-inning affair.

Allison Hensley batted 2 for 2, scored three times and tallied two RBIs in the winning cause. Others contributing two hits for Unicoi were Leah Edney (2 runs, 2 RBIs), Kerstin Buchanan (2 runs, 2 RBIs) and Kaylee Lamb (2 runs). Rachel Hatcher accounted for a double, three runs and a trio of RBIs.

Hannah Shelton handled Unicoi’s pitching duties, yielding two earned runs.

Topping a five-hit Central attack was Sydney Rhymer at 2 for 2.

Sullivan East 6, Johnson County 5

MOUNTAIN CITY — Hannah Scott’s two-out single in the top of the seventh inning brought home Kylee Wolfe from second base, snapping a 5-5 tie.

Wolfe struck for three extra-base hits, including a two-run, fifth-inning homer that wiped out a 4-2 deficit. She banged out two of Sullivan East’s five doubles, with Scott, Emma Timbs and Chelsea Sams each adding one apiece.

Scott also went 3 for 4 and Wolfe hurled six innings (three runs, 4 Ks) for the victory.

Natalie Winters topped Johnson County offensively, going 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Tennessee High 16, Cherokee 6

BRISTOL — The Lady Vikings’ McKenzie Orfield was 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs.

In addition, Elizabeth Ray homered in a 2-for-4 performance and showed some slick glovework at first base. Eight of nine Tennessee High players recorded a hit, with six of them recording multiple hits.

Bailey Lamb went the distance from the slab, moving to 2-0 on the year.

Richlands 12, Elizabethton 0

ELIZABETHTON — Collecting four RBIs and two doubles in a 4-for-4 showing at the dish, Mac Osborne also held the Lady Cyclones to three hits.

Emma Crawford added three RBIs as she and Ally Staten finished with two hits apiece. Elizabethton’s Kira Dillard went 2 for 2.

Baseball

Volunteer 15, West Greene 5

CHURCH HILL — Volunteer poured it on West Greene in a dominating performance at home to grab their first win of the season. Peyton Derrick batted 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs. Aaron Wills was 1 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs and Seth Kiersey was 1 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs.

Trey Tweed and Bailey McIntyre were both 1 for 3 for West Greene. The Buffaloes are winless at 0-2.

University High 6, Providence 2

Greer Barnett totaled nine strikeouts over six innings, Essau Byrd batted 3 for 4 and University High beat Providence Academy 6-2 on Thursday in a non-conference baseball game.

Yielding a run in the first and sixth (unearned) innings, Barnett held the Knights to two hits before Kaden Weir worked a hitless seventh, striking out two batters.

Brant Hare and Briley Townsend were each 2 for 3 for the Bucs. A two-run double from Bare highlighted a four-run UH second — in which J.P. Pealer and Michael Degennero lofted sacrifice flies — that snapped a 1-1 tie.

The Knights’ Hunter Reid finished 2 for 3.

Johnson County 11, Hampton 0

MOUNTAIN CITY — Jayden Joiner tossed a five-inning two-hitter for the Longhorns, totaling nine strikeouts along the way.

Reise Stout spearheaded Johnson County’s offensive showing by going 2 for 2 with a double, a sacrifice fly, two runs and two RBIs. Bradley Lavorsi drove in a pair of runs in a 2-for-3 effort and Petie Pavusek went 1 for 1, scored three times and walked twice.

Weston Throop batted 1 for 1 as well, drawing two bases on balls.

Parker Henry was 1 for 1 for the Bulldogs.

Happy Valley 11, Unaka 6

ELIZABETHTON — Going 3 for 3 with a double, three runs and three RBIs, Bart Wilson served as Happy Valley’s chief catalyst.

Managing just five hits, the Warriors took advantage of 12 walks issued by Unaka pitching. Travis Whitson (1 for 1) and Jacob Absher (2 runs) each drew three bases on balls.

Notching six strikeouts, Eli Ayers pitched 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief for a win made possible by a seven-run Warriors sixth inning.

Bryson Street, John Ramsey and Daniel Ensor registered two hits apiece for the Rangers, who finished with nine. Street drove in two runs and Ramsey had a double.

Sullivan North 8, FCA Flames 1

KINGSPORT — Hunter Dingus racked up a dozen strikeouts to cut down the Flames in a win for Sullivan North.

The Golden Raiders’ Tyler Depriest, Casey Hartsell and Braydon Wilhoit had two hits each.
