GATE CITY — Darren Reed is a Blue Devil again.

Terry Fields will not be. At least on the baseball field.

Reed, who recently resigned as head coach at Abingdon, was approved Thursday as a teacher and a coach at Gate City, where he served as an assistant football coach for several years — including as defensive coordinator — under former Blue Devils head coach Nick Colobro.

Reed will likely resume the duties as defensive coordinator when he joins the Gate City football program this year under head coach Chris Akers.

Akers is entering his third year as head coach of the Gate City program.

The Blue Devils finished 1-9 last season in Akers’ second year.

Although camps, 7-on-7 events and other workouts have been going on for some time, prep football practice in Virginia officially begins on July 26.

Attempts to reach Reed for comment late Thursday were unsuccessful.

Football is not the only athletic program at Gate City that will have a new look in the upcoming school year.

The Scott County School Board did not renew the contract of Blue Devils baseball coach Terry Fields.

Fields was named Gate City coach four years ago.

Last season, the Blue Devils finished with a 7-13 mark with a young squad. The year before, the team was 17-6 and Mountain 7 District co-champions.

“It was a rough year this year, but I’ve enjoyed all of them,” Fields, who coached 15 years at Rye Cove before going to Gate City, said Thursday.

“I guess the policymakers wanted to go a different direction. I hope they can put more into the field and get it fixed.

“Baseball is not a high priority at Gate City. It’s more about football and basketball, I guess.”

Fields did say he will enjoy having some time off in the spring.

“No one really realizes what goes into it.”

Tbe names of head assistant coach Jonathan Salyer and Jeremiah Riner, who has been an assistant coach at Wise Central the last couple of years before being hired at Gate City this month, have circulated as the top candidates to replace Fields.
