Prep softball playoffs: Bear River wins twice; Roy springs upset

GARLAND — Top-seeded Bear River scored five runs in the first inning and added 15 in the second frame to beat four-seed Ogden 20-0 in three innings to open the 4A state tournament Tuesday.

Kapri Toone gave up one hit in three innings and was 2 for 2 at the plate. Mercedes Call, Taylor Fox, Oaklie Maxfield, Toone and Ashley Hess each scored three runs.

BEAR RIVER 9, UINTAH 1

GARLAND — Bear River took a 3-1 lead into the fourth inning, then scored six runs to win in the 4A second-round game.

Kapri Toone hurled a complete game, giving up two hits and batting 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Taylor Fox hit 2 for 4 with a double. Mercedes Call and Oaklie Maxfield each hit 2 for 4, while Ashley Hess and Madison Morris each had a double.

The Bears (22-5) will face Tooele (25-1) in the 4A quarterfinals at the Spanish Fork Complex at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

GARLAND — Ogden’s season ended in a three-inning shutout loss to Snow Canyon.

ROY 11, MURRAY 1

MURRAY — Third-seeded Roy bagged a run-rule victory in six innings on the road against second-seeded Murray to open the 5A playoffs.

Kalli Jamison and Ana Palmer both batted 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Kayla Webb went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer and Tyler Fowers went 3 for 4 with a three-run triple.

Maysa Averett picked up the win for Roy in the circle. Roy (15-11) visits Region 8 champion Maple Mountain (20-6) at 4 p.m. Thursday.

LAYTON 11, AMERICAN FORK 0

LAYTON — Second-seeded Layton scored 10 runs in the first inning and the Lancers beat third-seeded American Fork by run rule in five innings in the 6A playoffs.

Pitcher Jackie Gold struck out six batters while Tylor Comeau, Maci Harrop and Mallory Anderson all doubled for the Lancers.

Layton (12-8) will host fourth-seeded Riverton (13-9) at 4 p.m. Thursday.

CLEARFIELD 4, PLEASANT GROVE 2

PLEASANT GROVE — Third-seeded Clearfield went on the road and took out second-seeded Pleasant Grove in the 6A tournament.

Kaycee Valencia drove in two runs as the Falcons built a 4-0 lead in the first two innings.

Jayci Finch pitched a complete game and allowed two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Madilyn Martindale also drove in a run for Clearfield.

The Falcons (16-7) travel to face Region 3 champion Herriman (18-10) on Thursday.

BINGHAM 10, DAVIS 0

SOUTH JORDAN — Four-seed Davis was shut out in five innings at top-seeded Bingham in the first round of the 6A state tournament.

Davis (12-9) visits third-seeded Granger (15-10) Thursday in an elimination game.

BOUNTIFUL 11, EAST 1

BOUNTIFUL — Alyssa Bowles hit a double, a home run and had five RBIs as Region 5 champion Bountiful brushed aside East in Tuesday’s 5A first-round playoff game.

McHailee Danner pitched four innings and struck out eight batters while also going 3 for 3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs. Sophia Stoddard went 2 for 3 with two doubles and Katie Tanner drove in two runs.

The Braves (22-4) host second-seeded Cottonwood (15-8) at 4 p.m. Thursday.

BOX ELDER 1, OLYMPUS 0

BRIGHAM CITY — Brylee Marziale tossed a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as second-seeded Box Elder edged third-seeded Olympus in the first round of the 5A playoffs Tuesday.

Reagan Marziale went 1 for 2 with an RBI single that plated Jostlen Leggett for the game’s only run. The Bees (20-6) will face the winner of Wednesday’s Corner Canyon-Skyridge game at 4 p.m. Thursday.

WEST 10, WOODS CROSS 0

SALT LAKE CITY — Four-seed Woods Cross suffered a five-inning shutout loss at top-seed West in the 5A tournament first round.

Woods Cross (4-19) visits third-seeded Alta (9-12) at 4 p.m. in an elimination game.
