KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett controlled the action, but Science Hill stole the moment and escaped with a 1-0 victory over the Indians in a District 1-AAA soccer game Monday night at Indian Highland Park.

In the teams’ first meeting this season, the Indians (10-1-1, 5-1) pinned a 4-2 loss on the Hilltoppers (5-6-1, 4-1).

D-B pelted Science Hill goalkeeper Chris Casey with shot after shot, but the ’Toppers were the ones finally breaking through. With 12:10 remaining, Nick Cahoon took a through ball from Ethan DiSantis, sprinted upfield and pushed it past Tribe all-star goalie Jacob Park.

“These games are about moments,” said Science Hill coach David Strickland. “We got the moment on that breakaway. That moment worked out. What a touch by Nick Cahoon when he brought that ball down. It was a moment of specialty. One of us was going to get it and it just happened to fall our way tonight.”

Casey made the goal stand by making 10 saves, several on high-percentage scoring chances.

“I just stood in there, stayed composed and did my thing,” Casey said. “”It was a big game, made some big saves. That’s what it’s all about.”

D-B outshot Science Hill 15-5 — 10-2 in shots on goal. The Indians had 10 corner kicks to Science Hill’s one.

“We made a little mistake at the end and we didn’t finish well tonight,” D-B coach Tom LaGuardia said. “We played a lot of balls right to him and made it easy on him. We had to step up and put a ball away.”

TENSE FINISH

The Hilltoppers had a chance to put away the game at the 1:50 mark, but Carson Cox’s penalty kick sailed over the cross bar, giving the Indians life. D-B nearly took advantage, getting several scoring chances in the final minute. Casey kept them off the board.

“Heck of a night for him,” Strickland said of his keeper. “He really had three or four key saves late in the game.”
