KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Police Department is investigating a crash involving a pedestrian on East Stone Drive.

On Saturday at around 9 p.m., KPD patrol officers responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the 1400 block of East Stone Drive. Due to the seriousness of injuries sustained by the pedestrian, the KPD Traffic Unit was called to the scene to investigate.

According to a news release from Tom Patton, KPD public information officer, a gray 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Phyllis Ann Nelson, 66, Weber City, appeared to be lawfully traveling west on East Stone Drive in the far right lane.

A pedestrian, Jason K. Chase, 48, Bristol, Tennessee, was attempting to cross East Stone Drive in a northbound direction.

Patton said Chase was neither crossing at an intersection nor in a crosswalk. Chase entered the path of Nelson’s Ford and was struck by the vehicle.

Chase was transported by Sullivan County EMS to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment of serious incapacitating injuries. As of Sunday evening, he remained hospitalized in critical condition. Nelson was not injured in the collision.

This collision remains under active investigation by the KPD Traffic Unit.
