MOUNT CARMEL — The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an armed robbery that took place during a power outage Friday afternoon at a convenience store on Carters Valley Road.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kevin Johnson responded to a robbery report at the Valley Mart, 6125 Carters Valley Road just north of the Mount Carmel city limits.

Johnson stated in his report that Sumitraben Prakashkumar told him although the electricity had gone off she kept the store open. Around 5:35 p.m., a man entered the store and reportedly pulled a knife on Prakashkumar and demanded all the cash in the register.

Prakashkumar emptied the cash drawer and gave the money to the man, who then fled the store. She wasn’t able to determine if he left in a vehicle or by foot, nor could she determine the direction he was traveling.

Prakashkumar described the man as being between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-11 and as “light dark skinned, possibly mixed, with a mask on, wearing a long sleeve shirt, and a pair of black biker gloves.”

Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to contact the HCSO at (423) 272-4848.
