Final suspect arrested in MeadowView shooting

KINGSPORT — The third suspect in this month's shooting at the MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center is now in jail.

According to the Kingsport Police Department, Matthew Phillips, 29, of 841 Dale Street, was arrested during a traffic stop by the Hawkins County Sheriff's Office. It occurred Sunday night at the intersection of Highway 11-W and Silver Lake Road.

Phillips is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping and attempted second-degree murder. According to KPD records, Phillips was tabbed as a suspect in the June 8 incident when his wallet and ID were found outside room 325. A bullet hole was in the door and a man inside was shot in the arm.

The incident was not random, according to police, but was a drug-related crime and initiated by a robbery attempt. The victim was treated and released from a local hospital.

Two additional suspects were previously arrested. Deonte Bristol, 22, of 1334 East Center St,. is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, attempted aggravated robbery and accessory after the fact to attempted second-degree murder. Brittany Stafford, 31, of 2985 Ashley St., is charged with accessory after the fact to attempted second-degree murder.

Citing a continuing investigation and future prosecution of the case, police are not releasing any additional information on the incident at this time.
