Pendergraft, Coomer resign coaching positions at Lee

The two most visible coaching positions for varsity boys athletics at Lee High are vacant, at least for now.

Football coach Jeremy Pendergraft and basketball coach Brian Coomer both submitted their resignations to the Lee County School Board this week.

Both cited the wish to spend more time with their families, and both said they plan on staying in their teaching positions at the school.

PENDERGRAFT STEPS DOWN

Pendergraft played for Lee before serving as an assistant coach — including in the capacities of offensive and defensive coordinator — under four head coaches.

He took charge of the football program prior to the 2017 season.

During his three-year tenure, Lee amassed a 13-18 record, including a postseason appearance in 2017.

“Generals football has been an integral part of my life for the last 30 years,” Pendergraft said in a statement Friday. “Lee High School has been my home for essentially my entire life.

“There comes a time when you have to take a step back and look at things from a different perspective. My passion for Generals football has consumed me for many, many years, but it doesn’t surpass my love for my family. In that regard, it’s time for my role as a husband and father to consume the overwhelming majority of my time.”

Pendergraft plans continue on as athletic director as well as support Lee athletics with as much vigor as he always has.

“I can promise you this: There won’t be a bigger fan or supporter in the crowd than me on Friday nights,” Pendergraft added. “Certainly as AD I hope we can attract a head coach that can build upon the foundation we’ve laid over the past several years and ultimately someone who can push the right buttons to help us win games on Friday nights.”

COOMER EXITS

Coomer tendered his resignation after one season at the helm of the Generals’ basketball program. Lee went 5-18 last season.

“I’ve dedicated most of my adult life to coaching in some capacity, whether it be football, basketball or softball for the past 20 years,” Coomer said Friday. “It’s just time for me to devote that time to my own kids.”

Coomer was an assistant coach at Lee for several years.
