Football Playoff Roundup: Woods Cross upsets Timpview; Syracuse, Morgan advance

PROVO — Woods Cross capped a furious fourth quarter with an 18-yard pass from Carston Naegle to Judge Samuelu to upset Timpview 28-24 in the opening round of the 5-A playoffs Friday.

Naegle tossed three scoring strikes for Woods Cross (7-4, Region 5 three-seed). He hit Franky Jacobson for a 19-yard score in the first quarter and connected with Samuelu from 31 yards out in the third quarter.

Justice Samuelu added a 44-yard scoring scamper in the fourth quarter.

Timpview (7-3, Region 7 two-seed) scored on three rushes and a field goal.

Woods Cross advances to play at Region 6 champion Lehi (9-2) on Nov. 3.

6-A Playoffs (First Round)


SYRACUSE — Syracuse took a 21-0 lead into the locker room on the way to an opening-round playoff victory.

Ty Metcalfe tossed three touchdown passes for Syracuse (7-3, Region 1 two-seed). Metcalfe hit Kaden Mueller from 30 yards out and Cole Thompson for a 25-yard score, both in the first quarter.

Cole Cheney scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter. Metcalfe found Austin Kirkman for a 6-yard scoring play in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Titans.

West Jordan (6-5, Region 3 three-seed) scored on a 3-yard pass in the third quarter.

Syracuse advances to play at Region 4 champion Bingham (10-0) on Nov. 3.


SALT LAKE CITY — East’s power run game was too much for Northridge in the opening round 6-A playoff game.

Jackson Murphy threw three touchdown passes for Northridge (6-4, Region 1 four-seed). Carson Stokes caught a 7-yard scoring strike in the second quarter. Hunter Harris hauled in a 6-yard touchdown in the third quarter and a 17 yard toss in the fourth to cap the scoring for the Knights.

East (9-2, Region 3 champion) scored seven rushing touchdowns and added a second-quarter safety.

5-A Playoffs (First Round)


DRAPER — Bountiful came back from a 21-3 halftime deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Corner Canyon kicked a field goal to beat the Braves in the first round of the 5-A playoffs.

Bountiful (5-6, Region 5 four-seed) scored on Bridger Booth field goals from 46 and 30 yards, a Karsten Wersland 1-yard plunge and a 77-yard pass from Jaxon Wood to Tavin Dougher.

Corner Canyon (10-0, Region 7 champion) won the game on a 35-yard field goal in the closing minutes. The Chargers added two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown.


BOUNTIFUL — Jordan took a 14-10 lead into halftime and held on for the win at Viewmont in the opening round of the 5-A playoffs.

The Beetdiggers (7-4, Region 7 four-seed) added two more touchdowns in the third quarter.

Viewmont, the Region 5 champion, finished its season 7-3.

4-A Playoffs (First Round)


OREM — Bear River punched in a late touchdown to get on the board in an otherwise lopsided loss to Region 10 champion Orem.

Orem (9-2) led 23-0 at halftime and outgained Bear River (6-5, Region 12 four-seed) 525 to 108. Tigers’ quarterback Cooper Legas threw five touchdown passes.

Bradey Brown threw for 109 yards for Bear River, hitting Parker Coombs on a 20-yard score in the fourth quarter.


WASHINGTON TERRACE — Bonneville turned an early interception into a 7-0 lead, but Desert Hills responded with four second-quarter touchdowns to take control and beat Bonneville in the first round of the 4-A playoffs.

Ryker Jensen returned a Desert Hills interception to the Thunder 7, and Mirko Villanueva scored on a 1-yard plunge to give the Lakers (4-7, Region 11 two-seed) the early lead. Bonneville’s other score came on a screen pass from Jonah Nielson to Trent Citte that went for a 79-yard touchdown.

Desert Hills (6-4, Region 9 three-seed) had five rushing touchdowns, a pick-six and a field goal.

3-A Playoffs (Quarterfinals)


MORGAN — Morgan scored the final 17 points to turn a third-quarter deficit into an opening-round victory over Richfield.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw Morgan leading 10-6 at the break, Richfield (6-5, 3-A South four-seed) took a 13-10 lead on a 3-yard run.

Morgan (8-2, 3-A North champion) responded with a Carson Flitton 26-yard field goal to tie, then a Jake Stephens 5 yard run and a Bridger Miller 3 yard run to secure the win.

The Trojans scored in the first half on a 65-yard pass from Stephens to Tyson Hurd and a Flitton 42-yard field goal.

Morgan advances to the 3-A semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Weber State University. The Trojans will face 3-A South two-seed Juab (7-3)

1-A Playoffs (First Round)


LAYTON — Kanab scored 38 first-half points, then held off a Layton Christian comeback bid to secure a road win in the opening round of the 1-A playoffs.

Layton Christian fumbled on its first possession. Kanab (5-6, 1-A South three-seed) recovered on the LCA 19 and scored a rushing touchdown two plays later.

Then LCA (6-5, 1-A North two-seed) fumbled the ensuing kickoff, leading to a Cowboy field goal. Kanab added four more touchdowns before halftime.

Layton Christian forced a fumble on the second-half kickoff and scored three plays later on a Ryleigh McCombs 4-yard run, then McCombs passed to Jaice Holt for a two-point conversion.

LCA recovered a Kanab fumbled shotgun snap on the Cowboys’ first play from scrimmage and converted that turnover into a 31-yard touchdown pass from Holt to McCombs and a McCombs run for two.
