NEW YORK — Mac McClung of Gate City was one of three Georgetown players named to the Big East Conference all-freshman men’s basketball team Sunday.

McClung was joined by fellow guard James Akinjo and forward Josh LeBlanc, making the Hoyas just the second team in conference history to land three players on the all-freshman team in the same year. The other was Pittsburgh in 1987-88: Sean Miller, Bobby Martin and Jason Matthews.

Akinjo and McClung have been the conference’s top freshman scorers most of the season. Going into the league tournament, McClung is averaging 13.4 points and Akinjo is averaging 13.3 points and a league-leading 5.4 assists. LeBlanc has been an active force inside while averaging 9.4 points and 7.5 rebounds.

Others making the all-freshman team were Creighton’s Marcus Zegarowski, Marquette’s Joey Hauser and Villanova’s Saddiq Bey.

Georgetown (19-12) opens play in the Big East tournament Thursday with a quarterfinal matchup with Seton Hall (18-12). Tipoff at Madison Square Garden is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.
