Lady Warriors, Wolfpack move on to Region 2D semis

Mountain 7 District girls basketball powers Wise Central and Ridgeview both advanced to the Region 2D tournament semifinals on Tuesday.

Central blew away Marion 71-38 in Norton and Ridgeview triumphed over Graham 52-41 in Clintwood to reach Thursday’s regional final four at Virginia High’s Bearcat Den.

The Lady Warriors — who led the Scarlet Hurricanes 23-1 after the first quarter of play — got 20 points from Brittany Mullins. Hannah Carter contributed 16 points and Dee Cvetnich added 12 to the winning cause.

Central faces Lebanon, a 45-44 quarterfinal winner over Gate City, on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Nikole Counts had 23 points to power Ridgeview into a Thursday semifinal clash with Virginia High, which topped Union 58-57 in overtime to win its quarterfinal.

Hailey Sutherland added 10 points for the Lady Wolfpack.

REGION 1D

J.I. Burton 97, Honaker 54

HONAKER — The J.I. Burton boys again hovered around the 100-point mark and this time the Raiders’ offensive output carried them into the regional semifinals.

Caleb Williams blazed in 27 points, Mikey Culbertson scored 17, Zac Campbell put in 16 and Houston Thacker totaled 14 to stoke the Burton fire. Thacker made his a double-double night after also grabbing 13 rebounds.

Grayson Honaker led the Tigers with 22 points.

The Raiders advanced to face Twin Valley on Friday in the 7 p.m. semifinal game at Virginia High. The Panthers held off Chilhowie 61-57 to advance. The 8:30 p.m. semifinal will pit Grundy against Eastside after the Golden Wave dispatched Holston 64-49 and the Spartans rolled over Northwood 82-68.

Grundy 53, Thomas Walker 51, OT

GRUNDY — The Lady Pioneers fought until the final seconds — and through the overtime period — but fell to the Lady Golden Wave in the Region 1D quarterfinals.

Maggie Deel hit a 3-pointer with 26 ticks left in the extra period and Emma Deel put back her own miss to give Grundy the win and a spot opposite Patrick Henry in Friday’s semifinals at Virginia High. The Lady Rebels took care of Council 67-34 in their quarterfinal game.

Mashayla Belcher put up 18 points to lead Grundy.

Talyn Dibrell paced Thomas Walker with 19 points and Abby Bullins added 10.
