Union shines at foul line in win at Lee

BEN HUR — The Union boys basketball team used offensive balance and an impressive showing at the free-throw line to take care of Lee 60-45 in Mountain 7 District action on Friday.

The Bears (11-9, 7-3) hit 20 of 24 foul shots — including 12 of 12 attempts in the fourth quarter — to secure the win. Noah Garrison went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line as part of his 12-point night.

Joining Garrison in double figures for Union were Andy Jones with 14 points, Alex Rasnick with 12 and Justin Falin and Connor Giza with 10 apiece. Jones, a freshman, scored eight of his total in the final quarter.

Jacob Whitaker put up 11 points for the Generals (3-15, 2-8), who attempted just four foul shots and made two. Whitaker and Jaxon Collier hit three 3-pointers apiece.

Union returns home Tuesday for a Mountain 7 matchup with Wise Central.

J.I. BURTON 75, THOMAS WALKER 39

EWING — Houston Thacker and Caleb Williams scored 18 points apiece in the Raiders’ Cumberland District rout of the Pioneers.

Derrick Allen helped out with 13 points and Zach Campbell added 11 for J.I. Burton (15-5, 7-1).

Caleb Yeary scored 13 points for Thomas Walker (6-13, 4-5).

EASTSIDE 77, RYE COVE 17

CLINCHPORT — Ethan Powers fired up 28 points in the Spartans’ dominating win over the Eagles (4-14, 2-6 Cumberland District).

Nick Livington scored 16 points and Connor Blevins had 10 for Eastside (18-3, 8-1).

Chase Love had 12 of Rye Cove’s total of 17.

CASTLEWOOD 46, TWIN SPRINGS 38

CASTLEWOOD — Brady Gilbert put up 18 points and Zach Owens added 11 in leading the Blue Devils (5-10, 3-5) to the Cumberland home win.

Justin Reed was tops for the Titans (4-14, 1-7) with 10 points.

SCIENCE HILL 77, DAVID CROCKETT 52

JOHNSON CITY — The Hilltoppers (13-14, 7-4 Big 7) took over sole possession of third place in the conference with one of their top scoring performances of the season.

Drew Morrison finished with 17 points, Will Stevens scored 14 and Andrew Miller added 13 for Science Hill, which piled up 24 assists. Jake Matherne had eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots, and Hunter Phillips had 10 points and seven rebounds.

For Crockett (7-18, 3-8), Mack Hensley led the way with 16 points. Donta Hackler added 14 and Mason Britton had 10.

TENNESSEE HIGH 72, VOLUNTEER 47

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Christian Webb scored 17 points, Nolan Wishon had 14 and the Vikings (20-6, 8-2) ran away from the Falcons in the second half. Cole McBrayer also hit double digits with 11 points.

Chance Johnson matched Webb with 17 points for Volunteer (5-20, 2-8) and Creed Christian scored eight.

NORTH GREENE 56, SULLIVAN NORTH 41

BAILEYTON — Turner Bailey knocked down seven shots behind the 3-point arc, scoring a game-high 27 points to lead the Huskies (18-7, 5-3 Watauga Valley Conference) over the Golden Raiders (6-17, 0-7).

Brandon Malone dropped a dozen points and Tom Skorsch finished with 10.

Trey Williams and C.J. Mardis each scored 14 points for North.

HAMPTON 50, UNIVERSITY HIGH 48

HAMPTON — Rocky Croy and Caleb Oaks hit free throws in the final seconds to lift the Bulldogs to the Watauga Valley win.

University High (19-5, 17-1), which owns a half-game lead on the Bulldogs (18-8, 6-1) for first place, missed on a long heave at the buzzer.

Oaks led Hampton with 15 points and Jared Bentley scored 13.

Kaleb Meredith had 21 points and six rebounds for the Bucs and Marshall Fleenor added 10 points.

ELIZABETHTON 70, UNICOI COUNTY 65

ELIZABETHTON — The Cyclones rallied from an early deficit to take the Three Rivers Conference win.

Going 8 of 10 from the free-throw line, Eric Wilson had a team-best 18 points to lead Elizabethton (18-4, 10-1). Parker Hughes had 17, Nico Ashley 15 and Evan Perkins 11. The Cyclones attacked the basket and held a 27-8 advantage in free-throw attempts.

Brock Thompson pitched in a game-high 19 points for Unicoi County (4-20, 1-10). Gavin Casey came through with 18 points and Robbie O’Dell scored 11.

LAKEWAY CHRISTIAN 58, TRI-CITIES CHRISTIAN 33

WHITE PINE — Dante Harris had a team-high 14 points to lead the Lions to the win.

Drew Correll had 16 points and Adam Pigeon was the next highest scorer with six for the Eagles.

CEDAR VIEW CHRISTIAN 44, SOUTH HAVEN 33

KINGSPORT — Cedar View Christian used 26 turnovers to topple South Haven.

Nick Rose led the Seahawks with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Manny Deng dropped 11 points for South Haven.

GIRLS

EASTSIDE 63, RYE COVE 51

CLINCHPORT — Kaylee Yates dropped in 22 points for the Lady Spartans, who locked up another Cumberland District regular-season championship with the road win.

Anna Whited added 16 for Eastside (15-6, 9-0), which won the title for the third straight season.

Kaleigh Sloan scored 12 points for Rye Cove (7-11, 3-5). Grace Rhoton added 11.

UNION 70, LEE 36

BEN HUR — The Lady Bears used their dynamic duo of Emili Brooks, who scored 24 points, Jayda Smith, who scored 23, to cruise to the Mountain 7 District rout of Lee.

Brooks also piled up eight steals, six rebounds and five assists and Smith had five board and five steals.

Heather Lipps added 13 points with five steals for Union (12-7, 3-7).

Shelbie Fannon finished with 11 points for the Lady Generals (4-15, 1-9) and Kattie Martin chipped in 10.

THOMAS WALKER 58, J.I. BURTON 14

EWING — Tayln Dibrell scored 16 points in the Lady Pioneers’ runaway Cumberland District win over the Lady Raiders (8-11, 1-7).

Madison Mayes added 13 points and Lakin Burke added 10 for Thomas Walker (13-5, 7-2).

TWIN SPRINGS 53, CASTLEWOOD 26

NICKELSVILLE — Abby Castle scored 19 points and the Lady Titans more than doubled up the Lady Blue Devils.

Emaleigh Powers contributed 14 points, six steals and six rebounds for Twin Springs (9-10, 5-3).

Brooke Banner put up 15 points to lead Castlewood (1-15, 0-8).

VOLUNTEER 42, TENNESSEE HIGH 38

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Aliyah Trent scored 12 points to help the Lady Falcons pick up the tough Big 7 road win against the Lady Vikings.

Kenady Knittle and Bryna Minton each added seven points for Volunteer (6-19, 2-8).

Annie Hayes netted 18 for Tennessee High (7-18, 1-9).

SCIENCE HILL 70, DAVID CROCKETT 25

JOHNSON CITY — The Lady Hilltoppers scored 28 second-quarter points on their way to a Big 7 drubbing of the Lady Pioneers.

Science Hill (23-3, 10-1) led 43-16 at halftime.

Alasia Smith once again powered the scoring assault, finishing with 21 points. Jeila Greenlee posted a 14-point performance.

Emma Gouge led Crockett (8-15, 3-7) with nine points.

NORTH GREENE 62, SULLIVAN NORTH 24

BAILEYTON — A balanced scoring attack with three players — Haleigh Bernard, Charlotte Roschkowski and Emma Southerland — with seven points apiece led the Lady Huskies (20-5, 7-1 Watauga Valley) over the Lady Raiders (8-10, 0-7).

Lilly Crawford had a game-high 10 points for North, who got six points from Alex Lipoma.

SOUTH HAVEN 45, CEDAR VIEW CHRISTIAN 30

KINGSPORT — Jordan McElyea scored 14 points and Desi White contributed 12 in South Haven’s win on the road.

Brooklyn Derrick netted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Jenny Droak chipped in with 10 points.
