Burton overwhelms Rye Cove with 16 3-pointers

CLINCHPORT — The J.I. Burton boys basketball team didn’t feel the need to spend a lot of time inside the 3-point arc Friday.

Jonah Cochrane knocked down eight 3-pointers to account for his 24 points and the Raiders sank 16 treys overall in cruising to a 90-41 Cumberland District win at Rye Cove.

Zack Campbell contributed 19 points, Mikey Culbertson 12, Trevor Culbertson 10 and Houston Thacker eight with 10 rebounds for Burton.

Chase Love accounted for more than half of Rye Cove’s points, scoring 21.

The Eagles were coming off a 58-41 road win over Hurley in which Love scored 24 points.

EASTSIDE 91, TWIN SPRINGS 25

NICKELSVILLE — Ethan Powers blazed the nets for 29 points in the Spartans’ dominating Cumberland victory on the road.

Chris Swann added 16 points, Nick Livingston chipped in 14 and Justin Reed tagged 11 on the winning cause.

UNION 65, RIDGEVIEW 53

CLINTWOOD — Noah Garrison led the Bears’ balanced offensive attack with 19 points in the Mountain 7 District win.

Freshman Andy Jones and Justin Falin added 15 apiece for Union, which outscored the Wolfpack 20-6 in the third quarter.

TENNESSEE HIGH 78, SULLIVAN EAST 63

BLUFF CITY — Christian Webb scored 27 points and the Vikings won a 3-point battle over the Patriots.

Webb made three of Tennessee High’s eight 3-pointers. He was helped by 10 points apiece from Cade Mitchell and Cole McBrayer.

East made 10 shots from 3-point range and was led in scoring by Mason Johnson’s 14 points. Adam Davison contributed 12 points, Dylan Bartley had 11 and Dustin Bartley added 10.

HAMPTON 85, CLOUDLAND 57

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Jordan Bentley scored 24 points, including 14 in the second quarter, in the Bulldogs’ Watauga Valley Conference win.

Izaak Hill added 13 points for Hampton and Conor Jones had 10.

Robert Leeper had 16 points and Josh Blair added 12 for the Highlanders.

JOHNSON COUNTY 61, ELIZABETHTON 55

ELIZABETHTON — The Longhorns (16-4, 6-1) took down the Cyclones (13-4, 6-1) to forge a tie atop the Three Rivers standings.

Blake Atwood pumped in 25 points to lead Johnson County, which pushed its winning streak to 11, and Zack Eller came through with 18. 

Eric Wilson had a team-high 15 points for Elizabethton and Nico Ashley followed with 13.

CEDAR VIEW CHRISTIAN 58, PISGAH 13

KINGSPORT — Nick Rose powered Cedar View Christian to a blowout win over Pisgah, tallying 22 points.

Andrew Trent added 15 in the win.

Seth Cook scored 11 points for Pisgah.

BEREAN CHRISTIAN 45, TRI-CITIES CHRISTIAN 37

BLOUNTVILLE — Drew Correll scored a game-high 16 points, but Tri-Cities Christian still fell to Berean Christian.

Adam Pigeon grabbed 10 rebounds for the Eagles (5-8).

GIRLS

RIDGEVIEW 58, UNION 38

CLINTWOOD — Nikole Counts and Brooke Frazier had 13 points apiece to power the Lady Wolfpack to the Mountain 7 victory.

Freshman Hailey Sutherland added 10 points and seven rebounds for Ridgeview (12-3, 5-1). Bailey Frazier finished with eight points, seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

ABINGDON 70, JOHN BATTLE 46

BRISTOL, Va. — Peyton Carter scored 27 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to lead the Lady Falcons to the Mountain 7 win.

Haylee Dye was tops for the home team with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

RYE COVE 59, J.I. BURTON 47

CLINCHPORT — Katy Roller recorded 24 points, eight rebounds and two steals and the Lady Eagles held off the Lady Raiders in Cumberland action.

Kaleigh Sloan had an impressive double-double of 18 points and 16 boards for Rye Cove.

Kaylee Jenkins scored 13 points and Sarah Mullins 12 for Burton.

EASTSIDE 56, TWIN SPRINGS 50

NICKELSVILLE — Kaylee Yates fired up 21 points and snagged 10 rebounds to help the Lady Spartans pull out the Cumberland win over the host Lady Titans.

Carrie Boyd added 15 points Anna Whited 12 for Eastside.

Emaleigh Powers was tops for Twin Springs with 11 points and Aubrey Powers and Abby Castle each tallied 10.

THOMAS WALKER 53, CASTLEWOOD 19

CASTLEWOOD — Lakin Burke dropped in 14 points and Tenley Jackson had 13 in the Lady Pioneers’ overwhelming Cumberland win.

Hannah Ingle scored nine points for Castlewood.

ELIZABETHTON 55, JOHNSON COUNTY 54, OT

ELIZABETHTON — The Lady Cyclones (3-12, 2-5) held off the Lady Longhorns (8-10, 2-5) to escape the Three Rivers basement.

Morgan Headrick finished with a game-high 20 points to go with nine rebounds and a blocked shot for Elizabethton.

CLOUDLAND 60, HAMPTON 31

ROAN MOUNTAIN — Stacia Wilson had 16 points and Mandy Benfield 10 in the Lady Highlanders’ Watauga Valley Conference victory.

Stephanie Campbell scored eight for Hampton.

UNAKA 55, NORTH GREENE 53

ELIZABETHTON — Savannah Tipton scored 14 points, Jada Whitehead added 12 and Madison Pierce had 10 for the Lady Rangers.

Breezy Savage led North Greene with 20 points.

PISGAH 51, CEDAR VIEW CHRISTIAN 38

KINGSPORT — Kaylynn Walls scored 17 points and Nicole Bias had 16 for Mount Pisgah.

Kara Seabolt paced the Lady Seahawks with 13 points.
