KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Mets took a crucial doubleheader from the Bristol Pirates (29-32) on Wednesday at Hunter Wright Stadium.

The K-Mets (31-30) won the first game 7-6 and the second 13-6.

In the first game, the Mets were trailing 4-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. They then exploded for six runs that started with a Jarred Kelenic solo home run to center field.

Shervyen Newton singled and the Pirates 2ad to make a pitching change.

New pitcher Colin Selby walked the bases loaded and then walked in a run, and the lead was cut to 4-3.

After another run was walked in to tie the game, Raul Beracierta singled up the middle and scored Ronny Maurico and Domingo Martinez to give the Mets a  two-run advantage.

Guillermo Granadillo singled and drove in Kenny Hernandez, and the Mets turned a three-run deficit to a three-run advantage.

In the back half of the twin bill, the K-Mets didn’t need a rally as they jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first three innings.

Granadillo got three RBIs in the game while Mauricio and Kelenic each had two.

Bristol threatened by getting six runs in the top of the fourth inning, but could get no closer.

With the two wins, Kingsport now has a two-game lead on the Pirates for the second spot in the Appalachian League West Division. The Mets will host Bristol on Thursday for the final game of the series.

In the first game, the winning pitcher was Willy Taveras, while Luis Nova took the loss for the Pirates.

In the second game, Jose Moreno was the winner, while Steven Jennings was tagged for the loss.
